How Long Does AHPRA Registration Take for UK Doctors?

Some applicants are faster, some slower, and almost all of the variation comes down to two things: how quickly you complete primary source verification, and whether your application lands complete on the first submission.

The short answer, stage by stage

For most UK-trained doctors applying for provisional or specialist registration, the journey looks like this:

• Document gathering and certification: 2–6 weeks, depending on how organised you are and how quickly your medical school and the General Medical Council (GMC) respond.
• EPIC verification of your primary qualification: commonly 4–12 weeks. This runs through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and depends on your medical school confirming your degree.
• AHPRA assessment of a complete application: often quoted in the region of 4–8 weeks once everything is in, though complex applications and peak periods can stretch this.

What is EPIC verification and why is it the bottleneck?

Before AHPRA will grant registration, your primary medical degree must be verified at source through EPIC — the Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials. You create an EPIC account, upload your degree certificate, and ECFMG contacts your medical school to confirm it is authentic.

This is the stage you control least. UK medical schools vary enormously in how quickly they respond to verification requests: some turn them around in a fortnight, others take two or three months, particularly over the summer when administrative offices run on reduced staffing. Two practical tips: start EPIC before anything else, ideally the same week you decide to apply, and email your medical school's registry directly to let them know a request is coming — a polite nudge genuinely speeds things up.

What slows applications down

AHPRA assessment itself is rarely the problem. Incomplete applications are. The most common avoidable delays are:

• Certificate of Good Standing timing. The GMC certificate is only valid for three months from issue, so if you order it too early it expires before AHPRA assesses your file, and you have to order another.
• Name mismatches. If your degree certificate, passport and GMC record show different versions of your name (marriage, anglicised spellings), you will need supporting evidence such as a marriage certificate or deed poll.

Order your Certificate of Good Standing last, so it is fresh when your file is assessed. Triple-check certification requirements before submitting. Respond to any AHPRA request for information within days, not weeks — files sit in a queue again after each response.
